Background of the study
The rapid proliferation of social media platforms has transformed the landscape of political communication, significantly influencing political awareness among residents. In Awka South, Anambra State, social media has emerged as a crucial tool for disseminating political information, mobilizing voters, and shaping public opinion. The interactive nature of these platforms allows citizens to engage in political debates, share information, and hold public officials accountable (Nwankwo, 2023). Recent research indicates that social media not only enhances political awareness but also encourages greater participation in local governance by providing an accessible forum for civic dialogue (Okafor, 2024). However, challenges such as misinformation, echo chambers, and digital divides remain prevalent, potentially distorting political perceptions and undermining informed decision-making (Eze, 2025). This study investigates how social media influences political awareness and participation among residents of Awka South. By examining the interplay between digital communication and local political processes, the research seeks to understand both the empowering and disruptive aspects of social media in a contemporary democratic context.

Statement of the problem
Despite its potential as a tool for enhancing political awareness, the impact of social media in Awka South is marred by challenges including misinformation and digital exclusion. Many residents remain vulnerable to the effects of biased or inaccurate information, which can distort their political perceptions and decision-making processes. Furthermore, the uneven distribution of digital resources has created disparities in access to credible political content. These issues contribute to a polarized political environment where informed participation is limited. The study aims to address these problems by exploring how social media shapes political awareness and the implications this has on local governance, thereby identifying strategies to mitigate adverse effects while maximizing its potential benefits.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of social media on political awareness in Awka South.

  2. To identify the challenges associated with social media usage in political communication.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the positive effects of social media on political participation.

Research questions:

  1. In what ways does social media shape political awareness among residents of Awka South?

  2. What are the key challenges faced by users in accessing reliable political information online?

  3. How can social media be leveraged to improve informed political participation?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Social media significantly increases political awareness among residents.

  2. H2: Misinformation on social media negatively impacts informed political participation.

  3. H3: Strategies that promote digital literacy can enhance the positive role of social media in local politics.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative role of social media in political awareness and participation in Awka South. The insights generated will help stakeholders develop strategies to combat misinformation and improve digital literacy, thereby strengthening democratic engagement. The research contributes to the broader understanding of how digital platforms can be harnessed for effective political communication and civic participation, offering guidance for policymakers and community leaders in the digital age (Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the influence of social media on political awareness and participation within Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State. It focuses exclusively on digital platforms and their impact on local political dynamics.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Social Media: Digital platforms that enable users to create, share, and exchange information and ideas.

  2. Political Awareness: The level of understanding and engagement individuals have regarding political processes and issues.

  3. Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively access, evaluate, and utilize digital information.
